Der junge englische Schriftsteller Basil kommt nach Kreta, um dort eine von seinem Vater geerbte Braunkohlemine zu betreiben. Ihm schließt sich der Mazedonier Alexis Sorbas an, und die beiden ziehen zusammen in das Hotel der alternden französischen Kurtisane Mme. Hortense, der Sorbas den Hof zu machen beginnt. Sein Rat an Basil, sich einer schönen Witwe zu nähern, hat tragische Folgen: als Basil beobachtet wird, wie er deren Haus verläßt, bringt sich einer ihrer vielen Verehrer aus Verzweiflung um, woraufhin die Witwe von den Dorfbewohnern zu Tode gesteinigt wird.
